Providing technical, engineering, and monitoring services for the recovery of petroleum products and the remediation of oil pollution of groundwater in the Rey industrial area -Phase II
The results of the first phase (step) of the study showed that the oil pollution has migrated beyond the monitoring wells. The composition of the pollution indicates the complexity of the environment and the existence of multiple sources of spill in the area.
The main objectives of the first phase of the study were defined as these: identification of the contamination extent and deep changes, determining the sources of contamination, leakage elimination, and increasing the oil recovery to reduce the mobility of the contaminated mass.
Due to the widespread of the contaminated area and its sensitive location and proximity to residential areas, a pollution remediation roadmap was prepared. Extensive actions were taken following the latest scientific methods to achieve the above objectives and in line with the roadmap. Vertical and horizontal spread of contamination, transmission routes and migration of contaminated mass, contamination plumes and multiple sources of oil spills were identified using drilling 70 exploratory wells, conducting advanced experiments and analyzes. After eliminating the sources of leakage and designing and implementing an automatic petroleum recovery system, a significant increase in the amount of petroleum recovery occurred. Consequently, a significant decrease of oil apparent thickness was observed in the recovery wells. Also, the apparent thickness of the oil layer in the monitoring wells practically in the main contamination mass decreased from about 20 m to less than 1 m. Based on the site conceptual model and the results of performed analyzes, the remediation methods were screened and prioritized for different parts of the area, and the basic and necessary actions for the next phase were identified and delivered to the employer.
